Journey into Literature

Journey into Literature

The literary work that captured my interest is Wordsworth’s poem because of the literature techniques used and the way it creates an emotional response from literature experience. For instance, the author used a simile of “fair as a star shining in the sky” (Clugston, 2010). This contributes a lot to the significance of the poem. This personification reflects Lucy’s beauty together with the mood of sadness. When I read this poem, I did not feel any attraction to Lucy but the literature techniques used makes me develop an honest response to Lucy. For instance, the speaker says, “Lucy ceased to be” (Clugston, 2010). This makes me to develop a sadness feeling and thus sympathizes with the speaker because of this situation. Therefore, basing on formalist approach, Wordsworth is a poem that shows personal honesty but it does not have value incase the speaker’s statements are meant for literary criticism.

One of the analytical approaches in literature works is the use of a formalist approach in a criticism essays. This approach is commonly applied in analyzing literature works. From the poem of Wordsworth, the formalist critic approaches identify the tools and techniques that the writer chooses that make the setting so memorable. The writer remembers Lucy as a good house cleaner and the speaker loved her. The setting is so memorable because of the way the speaker describes Lucy as somebody who was good but now she is dead and this makes the reader to feel sorry for the speaker. The characters are described as people who had a good relationship with each other and loved each other.

In addition, the figurative language used in this poem does not create a mood. The poem is developed in a way that makes the reader to think that it is a good poem but it ends in a way that creates sadness. This reveals a theme of sadness from the way the speaker brings out his sad memories. The plot is intriguing because of the way the speaker starts to describe Lucy among the few to be loved and the speaker praises her. Later, the speaker takes us to the sudden death of Lucy. The speaker says, “She is in her grave” (Clugston, 2010). Literary conventions and forms contribute to its appeal through various ways such as interpretation, evaluation and analysis of the situations. It requires one to focus on reading experience just like the way one focuses on the journey he or she has completed and then analyses the achievements.

The meaning of the above selected poem in this literature journey is the significance of personal integrity. The author reveals that in a society, there are different cases of people that include those who are rich and those who are poor. In this poem, Lucy is described as a house cleaner of the speaker implying that she was poor and the speaker seems to be a rich person. To demonstrate on the point of personal integrity as a value that should be acquired but not given, most of the poet writers portray the rich as people who lack this value. However, in this poem, it is so interesting because of the way the speaker memorizes how Lucy was good and lets us know the way the speaker loved her.

Wordsworth is a poem that shows personal honesty but it does not have value incase the speaker’s statements are meant for literary criticism. For instance in this poem, the literary techniques used in this poem to determine personal integrity can be compared through metaphors and her environment. For instance, the speaker says, “un trodden ways” (Clugston, 2010), meaning that Lucy used to have her own lifestyle. Lucy is personified with this imagery implying that she had a hidden lifestyle. The author used another literature tool of “a violet by a mossy stone” (Clugston, 2010), to compare her appearance. This creates an emotion of loneliness in Lucy when she was alive and tells us that the speaker isolated her thus reveals that the speaker could not have been an honest person.
