An Unforgettable Memory

One of the best memories that will be forever etched in my mind is the day I was selected for the basketball team in my freshman year. I can still remember everything that happened that day; from the coach giving me the fatherly pat on the back, to the exhilarating sounds of the beautiful cheerleaders, the ominous look of jealousy across the would-be teammates and the donning of the famous and coveted team jacket. Honestly, this day brings tears to my eyes. I felt untouchable and appallingly proud because I achieved a feat that completely superseded my expectations.

It was a warm and sunny day, cumulus clouds were gleaming from the sun’s rays, the pink blossoms were swaying in the wind while maple leaves were slowly falling on our green, wet lawn, after all it was spring, a season that had a positive effect on me. I woke up in the wee hours of the morning thanks to the anxiety that had kept me awake the whole night. After thanking God for the day, I quickly scampered to the kitchen for some heavy breakfast; it was going to be a tedious day after all. Like a glutton, I ate in a rush. I did not realize it at first, but the stunned look on my mother’s face summed it all up. She could feel my racing heartbeat, after all, she was my mother, and she knew everything about me. I was indeed terrified, the thought of me not making it to the team was tormenting. “Son, you are going to be fine,” said mother smiling. These seven words calmed me down; I was ready to face the day.

I hurried up the stairs to my bedroom, picked my lucky pendant, my basketball, my gym bag and authentic And 1 shoes and stared right into the eyes of Lebron James in the poster on my wall then ran out. After leaving home, I jogged all the way to school. “At least by the time I reach school, I will have already warmed up,” I thought. Within a few minutes, I was at the school basketball court. There was a nice feel to it. The previous night I had practiced on making lay-ups, dribbles and shots with the help of my best friend. That thought boosted my confidence. I quickly changed into my uniform, took my ball and started making jump shots. In a short while, I was drenched in sweat, but the anxiety only served as a steroid such that I did not feel tired at all. I was fit; it was going to be all right.

One by one, the hopefuls entered and soon we were a complete team. The coach was already there, as sober as ever with a mean look on his face. Without further a do, the training began. We did five consecutive laps around the court, lifted heavy weights, which caused a few of us to crumble under the mass and give up, rigorous sprinting leading to sprained ankles, bolt-ups that saw some of us reach our jumping limits, three pointers and lay-ups. After the workout was done, there were only four of us left and only one would make it to the team, since we were the last group to sign up for the team. Panting like dogs on a hot day and profusely sweating, the coach started walking towards us, mumbling a few words with his assistant, probably debating on which one of us would be selected. “You made it”, the coach said grinning at me. I was perplexed at first. One by one, claps raged all over the court. My friends and family were all there. I did not even notice their presence. It was true; I was a part of the team.

Until today, I still remember that day. It is said that the past should never be brought to the present but to me, some pasts are worth visiting. The day I was selected for the basketball was still remains to be my best memory ever.
